Student Testimonials

Tyler Piper

“The experiences you gain through DECA assist in developing a wide range of skills that are foundational in one’s career and is cultivated through real world examples. As an associate on several equity strategies for a $10 Billon wealth management firm, we are challenged every day to apply essential critical thinking applications to determine optimal risk vs return outcomes. The ability to think critically, develop effective communication, challenge assumptions and balance ethical decision making are all skills and requirements that our investors deem as table stakes; DECA was a significant contributor in developing those skills early on in my career. ”

“I took Foods l and ll during my time here at Indianola High School. First off, Mrs. Black is an amazing teacher. Her ability to teach and calmly disarm any situation helped a lot. In the class, you cook obviously. And yes, sometimes the class can get a little boring, but that literally happens in every class. All the new foods I got to try was awesome, and some of the class work was very fun and interesting. You get to watch movies and cook food with your friends. That's a pretty good benefit if you ask me. Mrs. Black is definitely one of my favorites because all she does for her classes, she takes her time to help any student who needs it or asks for it. Take her class, you'll love it I promise.”

“My experience with DECA in Sports and Entertainment Marketing has taught me many essential skills that relate to the Sports Business field. A few of these include: developing marketing strategies, conducting research, learning how to network, and fostering my personal development through in-person sales pitches. These skills, in addition to the confidence and ability to be decisive under pressure-which DECA instilled in me-equipped me with a solid foundation that prepared me for my internship!”

“DECA introduced me to a wide range of soft and hard skills, many of which I now use daily. The topics I covered in competitive events are similar to real-life scenarios I encountered during my first internship. Thanks to DECA, I had previous experience and knowledge that led me to success within my career! ”

“Foods was a very fun class for me as I got to learn more about cooking but also bond with my groups partners while we were cooking. Foods class and FCCLA are amazing opportunities to learn more about cooking while also learning about helping through your community. If you want to expand your knowledge on cooking and want to help your community I would highly suggest to join FCCLA and take this class. ”
